PoCo Economic Development Recognizes Businesses During 2026 Awards
Three businesses and four individuals were recognized in January during Pocahontas County Economic Development’s Annual Meeting. The winning business were as follows:
Small Business of the Year: Pocahontas Farm & Home
Farm & Home has been a locally owned and independently operated store serving Pocahontas and surrounding rural communities since 1959, making it a longstanding small-town business in the county. For decades, the store has provided essential tools, farm supplies, paint, building materials, lawn & garden goods, and expert advice. Ownership and management have stayed local and family-oriented, with a local family continuing the legacy and assuring customers that the store’s service and faces remain familiar — even as the broader brand has undergone corporate changes. The store’s endurance reflects the resilience and pride of small towns in Pocahontas County, where local businesses have historically played an role in community identity and economic life.
Large Business of the Year: PRO Cooperative
Founded through the collaborative spirit of local grain and farm service cooperatives, PRO Cooperative has grown into a cornerstone of the local agricultural economy. With its corporate headquarters in Pocahontas, the cooperative serves farmers and rural businesses across multiple counties, offering comprehensive support in grain marketing, agronomy, fuel and energy services, feed solutions, and equipment services. The dedication to building lasting partnerships with our members and community reflects the very best of what an agricultural cooperative can be. “Their innovative approach to farm services, strong support of local initiatives, and investment in people and facilities have made a measurable impact on our county’s economic vitality.” Beyond its business achievements, this business is recognized for its active role in community support, including contributions to local nonprofits, youth organizations, and emergency services — demonstrating a deep commitment to enhancing quality of life throughout the region.
Cornerstone Award: The Rialto Theatre
The Rialto Theatre is essential to Pocahontas County’s quality of life. By providing access to arts and entertainment, strengthening social connections, supporting downtown vitality, preserving historic identity, and enhancing community livability, this organization serves as a vital cultural and social resource for residents of all ages. Its continued operation ensures that rural residents can experience the same cultural opportunities as larger communities — close to home. This gem has served the community as a non-profit for over 30 years. It always gives back to the community by keeping prices low or offering free access and it plays a crucial role in the vitality of Pocahontas County.

Individual Awards
Julie Wurr of Heart n Home was honored with the Spirit Award for her leadership that consistently demonstrates compassion, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Steve Pelz from Palmer Telephone Company was recognized as Boss of the Year for his outstanding leadership, integrity, and commitment to both employees and the community served by the company for over 30 years. Eric Gerdes was honored as the Young Professional of the Year for possessing a strong work ethic, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence that sets him apart from his peers. And finally, Jim Pentico was chosen to receive the Distinguished Service Award as a result of his steadfast commitment to public service, leading with integrity, transparency, and a deep sense of responsibility.
